ENGHAVE CHURCH, VESTERBRO, COPENHAGEN

Built in 1929, Enghave Church stands quietly in a neighbourhood shaped by Nordic classicism and functionalism.
Where many churches are closed or left unused, this one has been reimagined — as a welcoming, contemporary space where tradition and modern use coexist.

The renovation, led by architects Frank Maali and Gemma Lalanda, preserves the church’s character while introducing a new spatial rhythm through tiered bamboo seating. Contrasting materials create a calm tension that strengthens the room’s presence and purpose.

Light plays a central role.
A ceiling of copper-finished pendants brings warmth and atmosphere, while indirect lighting opens the space above. Natural light flows from skylights and vertical openings — subtly highlighting the altar with a sense of the celestial.

In close collaboration with Okholm Lighting, light and architecture are woven together into a unified experience.
Enghave Church is not only restored — it is redefined as a church space for the future.
