RESTORING LIGHT - PRESERVING IDENTITY
Choosing renovation over replacement is not just a win for the environment — it’s a victory for the place itself.
Existing lighting carries stories. It’s part of a building’s identity. When preserved, it supports the architecture’s intention and the atmosphere it was meant to create.
For more than 50 years, Okholm Lighting has been committed to rescuing historic luminaires from being scrapped — in cities, churches and private buildings.
Modern lighting technology makes it easier than ever to upgrade old fixtures without compromising their original design — achieving better performance with less space.
One such example is the Wegner streetlamp, designed by Hans J. Wegner and his daughter, Marianne Wegner.
Originally produced by Louis Poulsen, the lamp was discontinued when it couldn’t accommodate energy-saving bulbs without altering the design.
But in many towns across Denmark, the Wegner lamp still defines the nightscape — and now, it can do so again.
Okholm Lighting has developed a renovation kit that upgrades the lamp while preserving its iconic form.
Recently, 29 Wegner luminaires in Aalborg were refurbished and reinstalled, once again lighting the city with their distinctive character and asymmetric beam.
Two renovation packages are available:
Package 1 includes full restoration — sandblasting, repainting, new blades, new polycarbonate lenses, sockets and wiring
Package 2 focuses on optical renewal — replacing lenses, sockets and cables
The lamp is particularly suited to urban centres. A visit to Tønder, where the Wegner lamp remains in use, offers a glimpse of its lasting quality.
And now Aalborg joins that story — with lighting that is technically updated, but true to its original soul.
Because sustainability is not only about innovation —
It’s also about preservation. And light, too, is part of our cultural heritage.
